Presentation of the latest research on the effects of protein supplementation in athletes.
A research project comprising several studies compared the effects of 100% All Beef bovine-protein products with those of whey protein or carbohydrate alone
The weather was poor on Friday, October 21. Even so, the room was full for Dr Fernando Naclerio's presentation of the latest research on the effects of protein supplementation in athletes.
A doctorate in Sport Sciences and a professorship in Strength Training and Sports Nutrition are among Dr Fernando Naclerio's many credentials. He is a leading authority in sport and an ideal researcher to study All Beef, Crown Sport Nutrition's protein supplement.
“Yes, we can confirm that people who drink protein shakes achieve better results”. The doctor opened his presentation with this unequivocal statement, which also summarized his analysis. It may seem obvious, but protein is beneficial.
Protein intake is essential for a healthy life, both for growing young people and adults whose bodies are undergoing change. “We need more protein,” he joked. Compared with older recommendations of 0.8 to 1 g per kg of body weight, research has shown that total daily intake should range from 1.5 to more than 2 g per kg of body weight, depending on the type of activity or training.
During the presentation, Fernando Naclerio discussed findings from other research groups showing that protein intake accelerates and supports muscle recovery, something “crucial for athletes because it enables them to recover better,” the doctor said.
Animal foods such as eggs, meat and fish also provide more protein than plant foods such as legumes.
In studies conducted by his research group, Dr Naclerio analyzed and compared All Beef with similar products derived from other protein sources, such as whey. Experiments involving groups of athletes produced several findings:
Participants who took All Beef (100% beef concentrate) increased their muscle mass and total lean mass slightly more than groups who consumed another extract. Dr Fernando Naclerio stated that “the beef product lacks nothing; it provides everything the body needs”.
Regarding iron, the experiments showed that athletes who consumed concentrated beef after training increased their levels of this mineral. The doctor concluded clearly that All Beef helps maintain adequate blood iron levels. He also highlighted an advantage over capsules: it is absorbed much better. This matters because we should “use easily absorbed foods to prevent iron levels from falling” and developing into a more serious condition such as anemia.
The professor emphasized the practical side of consuming protein—that is, eating. He supported protein products because they make dietary intake easier to control, “more than if we eat a steak.” With a steak, we do not know exactly what we are consuming or in what quantity. All Beef resolves those uncertainties and uses no tendons or waste products, only meat: pure protein.
Finally, during the question-and-answer session, an attendee asked how protein products compare with a “natural” diet. He closed the talk by answering: “For me, shakes made with protein are natural.”
