Getting exercise during Christmas can feel tiring. We spend the season with family and friends, set sport aside until January, and enjoy our Christmas feasts.

It should not be an excuse, however. Christmas offers many activities that will keep you from abandoning your exercise routine, at least completely.

Here are some options you can enjoy:

A Fun Run in Your Christmas Costume

Many cities around the world organize fun runs during the Christmas season with an amusing twist: every runner wears a costume!

This type of race is becoming increasingly common worldwide. Some feature only Santa Claus costumes, while others allow homemade or coordinated couples' costumes…

One example in Spain is the annual fun run organized by Moncada Town Council. Participants show off their best Christmas costumes over four kilometers of running. This year, it will take place on December 26.

So get your costume ready and go for a run!

Skiing in the Mountains

Even if we are keen skiers, it can be difficult to make skiing our regular sport because it requires very specific weather. We can only ski on snow, making it almost impossible to practice in the middle of August.

Christmas is a perfect time to put on our skis and escape to the mountains. The weather is suitable, and the holidays also give us more free time.

Our families have time off too. It is a great opportunity to go out together, enjoy the benefits of skiing, introduce the children to the sport, and finish with a snowball fight.

Cutting Christmas Trees

In the Americas, especially the United States, cutting trees to decorate homes for Christmas is common. In a sense, it can be considered a Christmas physical activity.

Some areas grow trees specifically for Christmas, supervise their cutting, and ensure that only those trees—not others that support wildlife—are used for decoration.

These farms hold tree-cutting contests in which participants prepare to become the fastest lumberjack in the neighborhood. It is certainly a different form of exercise, and one that can only be practiced at this time of year.

It is not very common in Spain, but if you are abroad this Christmas, you can give it a try. It is quite an experience!

Ice Skating

Ice skating is perhaps the sport most closely associated with Christmas. Like skiing, it is not available all year round, but it is very appealing to practice from time to time.
Ice rinks are easier to find at Christmas. Many shopping centers open their own family skating areas, and we happily step onto them. They also often put on ice-dance shows or similar entertainment in the evening, a good alternative once we are tired of skating.

As you can see, there are many ways to get some exercise this Christmas and avoid sitting at home. Our bodies will then be better prepared to resume their routine after the holidays. These activities are also fun to enjoy with family or friends!
