Pre-season moment! Triathlete Iñaki Pena-Manso Carral tells us the keys to being in top shape in order to later achieve the best results in triathlon events. Our CrownPro tells us how he plans his preseason!
Season planning is a crucial moment for any athlete, as it is the way to start a long endurance race that needs to gradually increase the level. Iñaki plans the season according to the main objectives (2 or 3), once the main objectives are set, he looks for other secondary races to
complete the calendar. He runs about 8 middle- and long-distance races a year.
How is your season division? He tells us the following: "I divide the season into a general conditioning phase, without large volumes, about 16-18 hours a week, where I do very solid strength work.
And subsequently I carry out an ATR-type periodization, progressively taking
the form up to the first main objective.
I am about being in shape when I should be in shape, I aim for 100% on the tests
important, and for that it is necessary to sacrifice a bit of fitness in other areas
races.
The start of the preseason for a triathlete can vary; in his case, the preseason always begins on 1 of November. And it lasts about 2 months or 2
Months and a half. During that time, his training routine is a volume of 16-18 hours per week. He usually does 5 swimming sessions, 3 or 4 biking sessions, and 3 running sessions, focusing on light aerobic paces and strength work.
To the question 'what is the difference between preseason training and training between races?' Iñaki answered us the following: 'the difference is, first, the volume. In the specific preparation for important races I reach 30 weekly hours, and about 20 km of swimming, 400 of biking, and 100 running, and two strength sessions in the gym. And the second is the intensity. In preseason I do not do high-intensity workouts.'
intensity, while in the impact microcycles I get to do 5 sessions of
high intensity (I don't work at medium paces).
What about food? How does he eat during pre-season? He tells us that his pre-season diet mainly consists of proteins, mainly eggs and fish, vegetables, legumes, fruit, and at breakfast he includes some cereal like oats. He supplements with BCAA, creatine, and Whey Protein.
