Exercise as Medicine: Preserving Muscle and Strength

The loss of strength and muscle mass in older people, a process called
sarcopenia, is associated with aging. A research study answered whether
This loss of muscle mass is an inevitable consequence of aging or if
It may be due to a decrease in physical activity. To do this, they evaluated 40
Master athletes (40 to 70 years old) who trained 4 or 5 days a week.
Surprisingly, no differences were found between the muscle mass of the
athletes of different ages, not even those over 70 years of age.
This shows that this loss of muscle mass and strength associated with aging
can be avoided or at least reduced by performing physical exercise throughout
life. Physical exercise, as well as adequate nutrition, are shown as
essential for good health at any age, but especially in people
elderly.
