The nutritional strategy during ultra-endurance triathlon events is one of the main concerns of athletes who compete in this type of event. The average caloric intake of an Ironman varies from 3.100 to 3.940 kcal, while energy expenditure ranges from 8.500 to 11-500 kcal. The results confirm the high energy demand of Ironman events, which is not compensated by nutrient and fluid intake, leading to a large energy deficit (70%). In addition, triathletes have very significant dehydration. This is a very important fact, because a loss of body fluids is not only related to a decrease in sports performance, but can also compromise the health of the athlete during the race. Therefore, the periodization of training must be accompanied by a correct nutritional strategy, demonstrating once again that the work of nutritionists and coaches must be coordinated.
