As I told you in the previous post about hydration …for training to continue being something good, you have to do things right and not leave anything to improvisation, so today I return to the topic of hydration. Yes, I know I can be a bit annoying on the subject, but we are in summer and being well hydrated is the great pending task for the athlete, which is why I insist so much on the topic.

Science says that we should ingest a total of between 400 and 600 ml of liquid per hour, to delay or minimize dehydration as much as possible. But as I have mentioned on other occasions, it is not enough to just drink water, since in order to retain that water inside the muscle cell we need mineral salts, mainly Sodium (Na). By consuming a technical isotonic drink like Isotonic Drink we ensure the optimal supply of this mineral, in addition to the carbohydrates necessary to maintain blood sugar.

But as I already mentioned to you last time, technical isotonic drinks can also contain other things, such as branched-chain amino acids, better known as BCAA. These three amino acids (Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine) are very important for athletes since they are essential and are also the majority in muscle mass, along with Glutamine, and that is why they are the first to be degraded during prolonged physical activities. This is due to the fact that they can easily enter the energy cycles directly and are therefore oxidized by the muscle as a source of energy, which saves glycogen and thus delays fatigue.Hence, it is so interesting to incorporate them into assimilable formats during sports practice, such as gels and isotonic drinks.

Another one of the actions they have during exercise is that they seem to be able to fight the central fatigue syndrome (CFS); this syndrome occurs mainly during intense and long-duration sports practice and consists of a feeling of tiredness that occurs at the mental level and causes the athlete to stop performing at their maximum level without any apparent physical problem. This happens because an imbalance occurs in the brain between BCAAs and another essential amino acid, Tryptophan. One of the actions of Tryptophan is to induce the synthesis of Serotonin.These four amino acids (the 3 branched ones and Tryptophan) bind to the same receptors, so the imbalance occurs when, during exercise, the BCAAs are required by the muscle as a source of energy. This causes there to be more free receptors to which Tryptophan can bind and induce the production of Serotonin, and therefore increase the feeling of well-being, which leads to a decrease in performance and can even result in quitting.
